The Pygmy Goat Breed
ORIGIN
The Pygmy goat is a miniature breed originating in West Africa, subsequently widely bred in the USA. The first breed genetics were imported from America to Australia in 2013. The MGBA has adopted standards and rules (including DNA parent verification) to support the use of imported semen in genetic recovery programs (percentage breeding) in Australia.

USES
Pygmy goats are easy to handle for all ages from the elderly to the very young. Pygmy Goats are great companion animals and are sometimes kept with other species for company. They are very popular at shows and their unique personalities make them easily trainable and gentle to handle. They are reliable little weed eaters and their small size means a smaller feed requirement compared to larger sized goats. Pygmy Goats produce enough milk to feed their offspring but are seldom used for milking purposes. Their coarse hair is great for craft ideas.
SIZE
Purebred Adult does up to 57cm and Bucks/wethers up to 60cm.
LIFESPAN
If in good health and well looked after, Pygmy goats can live anywhere between 10 to 15 years.
BREEDING
Paired from 12 to 18 months of age for the first time. Gestation is 145 to 153 days. Some does have been known to kid from 142 days. Pygmy does can have 1 to 4 kids.
PRICE
As this is a relatively new breed to Australia, Pygmy goats are individually priced by studs based on % genetics, gender, breed type, availability, show status and demand. Pygmy goats should be advertised with their % genetics. MGBA recommends you obtain a copy of the DNA parental verification papers before buying Pygmy breeding stock.
