The MGBA

The MGBA is all about perfecting, promoting and recording the four main miniature goat breeds in Australia. We are a member based Association, run by a team of dedicated volunteers from across the country. We work hard to maintain our high standards, not only of breeders and animals, but importantly of our MGBA Registry. Our members support the club by participating, by following our code of ethics, and importantly, registering and maintaining animal records.

Please note: The Myotonic Breed (including myotonic genetics) are not eligible for registration or transfer with the MGBA.

For more information regarding myotonia, contact Sue Ludwig, suez230@gmail.com or Jade Holberton, jade.holberton@bigpond.com

Joining as a member welcomes you into a friendly and supportive environment of long-time breeders and pet owners. A great community where you can learn about owning and breeding goats, animal husbandry, and showing.

Our Purpose

The Association’s focus is on perfecting the miniature breeds through supporting and educating our breeders, maintaining strict breed standards of excellence, and providing an accurate and current registry of animals. Our goal is to promote the highest standard of miniature goats at our breed shows and displays across Australia.

We register the Australian Miniature Goat, Australian Nuwby Goat, along with the Pygmy and Nigerian Dwarf goats including overseas Purebred animals bred from Embryo and Semen. We aim to advance the development of these breeds and the overall miniature goat industry in Australia.

We Support.

We support our breeders in maintaining a high standard of conduct, animal management, herd recording and the professional operation of their stud.   We offer member-led support for new members and breeders via our group page where they can tap into advice from others with years of experience. Our checklists and tips for new breeders can make a real difference when starting out.   And of course, our team of volunteers are here to help you – our registrars, show managers, membership officers and our MGBA committee members.

We educate.

We can help you find out more about the four miniature goat breeds we represent.  The history of the breed, standard of excellence and grading information, as well as general goat husbandry.  What you need to know when buying miniature goats, and for our new breeders, what they need to know when starting out.  Our blog and MGBA facebook page features the latest news and information from around the goat world and from our breeders.

We are a community.

Joining the MGBA will open you to a whole new ‘goatee’ community.  You will find new friends, new activities and support from other members.  Our breed shows are a great place to connect with other miniature goat enthusiasts and breeders alike, as well as the virtual social connections through our members group pages, and getting to know other members in your local area.  We are a great group of miniature goat lovers ready to share your passion for these awesome little creatures.

Breed Standards

The MGBA encourages the highest standard of breeding of miniature goats in Australia with strict height and breed standards.  And of course, we have the highest standards applied to our MGBA animal registry, including DNA parental verification for animals with imported genetics.   Our dedicated breeders are working to deliver improvements in every generation across their chosen breeds. Buying Miniature Goats

All our miniature goat breeds make awesome pets – they are wonderful, affectionate creatures who love attention.  There’s lots to know before you purchase your first miniature goats as they are a long term-commitment living 10 to 15 years or more.  You’ll need sufficient space to keep them, secure fencing, and a permanent shelter for starters. A PIC number is required, and sometimes local council approval.

BUYING FROM OUR BREEDERS

Our breeders our bound by a code of ethics, and requirements to register and maintain animal details.  Buying MGBA registered miniature goats gives you peace of mind that you will have an accurate record of the animal/s, and they are in fact miniature bred goats.  Breeding animals carrying Pygmy or Nigerian Dwarf genetics need DNA proof of parentage to enter our MGBA registry.
